Two friends thought they had discovered the perfect place to cool down after hours of hiking through a remote forest. Hidden beneath a waterfall was a deep natural pool surrounded by thick vegetation and steep rock walls. Excited by the secluded location, they entered the water and began taking photographs, completely unaware that they weren’t alone.

Nothing seemed unusual while they were swimming. It wasn’t until later that evening, when they started looking through their pictures, that one of them noticed something strange near the rocks behind them. A pale, human-like figure appeared to be standing at the edge of the waterfall, partially concealed by the mist. Neither woman remembered seeing anyone else anywhere near the pool.

They immediately compared two photographs taken only seconds apart. The mysterious figure appeared in both—but seemingly in different positions. In the first image, it stood farther back against the rocks. In the second, it appeared several feet closer to the water. What frightened them most was that there had been no obvious path leading to that section of the waterfall.

The friends returned to their accommodation and showed the photographs to the property owner. His reaction made them even more uncomfortable. He explained that hikers had occasionally mentioned seeing someone near the waterfall, despite the area being difficult to reach from that side. He strongly advised them not to return alone, particularly near sunset.

They never discovered exactly who—or what—had been standing behind them that afternoon. Whether it was another person who somehow reached the rocks unnoticed or something far stranger, the photographs remained the only evidence of the encounter. What had begun as two ordinary vacation pictures became images neither woman could look at again without remembering that mysterious figure silently watching them from beside the waterfall.

The unsettling effect of the photographs came from the difference between what the friends remembered and what they believed the images showed. During the swim, the waterfall had felt secluded and peaceful. Later, the same background seemed to contain a presence they had failed to notice. Nothing about the pictures changed when they examined them, yet their understanding of the afternoon changed completely.

That uncertainty remained unresolved. A shape in mist and water does not identify itself, and two images taken close together cannot provide a complete record of everything around the pool. The friends could compare the positions they saw, but they still could not establish how anyone had reached the rocks or why neither of them had noticed the figure at the time.

The property owner’s warning added to their unease without supplying a definitive explanation. Reports from other hikers suggested that they were not the first visitors to feel that something was unusual near the waterfall. Those reports did not determine whether the figure in their own photographs was a person, an effect of the setting, or something they had misunderstood.

What endured was the feeling attached to an ordinary souvenir. The photographs had been taken to remember a beautiful place. Instead, they preserved a question the friends could not answer, leaving the waterfall inseparable from the disturbing possibility that someone had been nearby all along.
