She Called Me a Failure, Then Begged Me for Help..

During college, I spent over $900 buying food for my roommate Alyssa when she was broke and struggling. Six years later, I lost my job after my company closed, so I approached Alyssa, whose small business was thriving, and asked for an interview. She laughed in front of her staff and said, “We’re not a charity! I don’t hire failures!” Heartbroken, I left without saying a word. Two days later, she called me in tears because her biggest client had discovered how she treated me and threatened to cancel their contract. The client was a woman I had worked with for years and had personally recommended Alyssa’s company to. She told Alyssa, “The woman you called a failure is the reason you have my account. If that’s how you treat people who helped you, I’m taking my business elsewhere.” Facing the loss of her biggest account, Alyssa offered me a job. I accepted, not for her sake, but for my own future. Today, I’m the head of operations, and that client and I meet every Friday. Alyssa never mentioned the $900 I once spent helping her, but she learned that the person she humiliated was the same person who had helped build her success. She called me a failure, never realizing I was the very bridge her business stood on.
