Seventeen Missed Calls… From the Daughter I Lost

At 3 a.m., I woke to seventeen missed calls from my daughter and a desperate message asking me to come quickly. I rushed to her house, fearing something terrible had happened, only to find her safe and confused. She insisted she had never called me. When I showed her the number, her expression changed. It belonged to Helen, my youngest daughter, who had passed away in a car accident the previous year at just nineteen. Seeing her number again brought back memories I had been struggling to cope with.

Before I could process what was happening, another message arrived asking where I was. With trembling hands, I called the number, and a young woman answered in tears, pleading for her father to help her. Gathering myself, I gently explained that I wasn’t her father and asked whom she was trying to reach. Her frightened voice reminded me of how vulnerable my own daughter might have sounded in a similar situation. The young woman explained that her car had broken down in a remote area, and she had been repeatedly calling her father, unaware that he had changed his phone number.

The number she had saved as “Dad” was now mine. It had once belonged to Helen, and this unexpected misunderstanding had brought her memory rushing back into my life. I stayed on the phone with the young woman, offering reassurance until help arrived. When the call ended, I sat alone in my car and cried until sunrise. For a brief moment, hearing that familiar number had made me feel close to Helen again. Though I understood what had really happened, the experience reminded me that the love we carry for someone never truly disappears, even when they are no longer with us.
