They had found each other so young, with a wedding ahead and years of happiness seemingly waiting, but the walk home would leave their families begging to wake from a nightmare.
Leah Victoria Fonte and Shane David Hirstius, both 21, were walking along Nicholson Drive in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, early on October 18, 2026, months before their planned March wedding.
Back home in Jefferson Parish, the people who had watched their childhood friendship become a love story were about to receive news no parent could prepare for.

A Sixth-Grade Friendship With a Wedding Ahead
Years ago, they were just two children who simply loved being around each other. Leah and Shane met in sixth grade and became best friends almost immediately, their families told Fox 8.
By freshman year of high school, that closeness had become a romance. They grew through their teenage years together, eventually preparing to marry in March 2027.
Shane attended Archbishop Rummel High School, where he pitched for the baseball team, before becoming a firefighter and operator with the Third District Volunteer Fire Department in River Ridge. His work meant answering calls from people having some of the worst moments of their lives.

Leah had her own way of reaching for people who needed help. She graduated magna cum laude from Kenner Discovery Health Sciences Academy in 2023 and became a Louisiana State University senior studying biological sciences on a pre-dental track.
She wanted to become a dentist, and she was already doing work that brought that ambition beyond a classroom. As fundraising chair for Global Dental Brigades, Leah helped raise money to bring dental care to underserved communities and volunteered in Panama.
Her mother, Jennifer Fonte, described a generosity that reached into the couple’s relationship, too. “They both did everything for other people, for each other,” Jennifer said. “There was no selfish bone in their body, ever.”
