The room was silent, but inside my head everything was loud. A rush of fear, disgust, and confusion crashed all at once as I stared at the tiny, twisted thing in my palm. I checked the cup, the kettle, the table—desperately searching for an explanation that didn’t make my skin crawl. Nothing. No clues, no trail, just me and this soft, shapeless creature that had just been in my mouth. For a while I couldn’t even move; my imagination did the rest. Parasite? Larva? Something growing in the water? Only when I forced myself to really look did the truth finally land: just a small gnat, swollen and softened by the hot tea. Harmless, ordinary, almost pathetic. And yet, that discovery didn’t erase the feeling. Sometimes the tiniest things can turn an ordinary evening into a moment you’ll never quite forget every time you lift a cup.
