Now, chilling footage and disturbing details are raising serious questions about how such a catastrophic mistake could have happened.
Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, died on Saturday during a bungee jumping event in Limeira, a city in São Paulo state, Brazil.
The young woman fell approximately 130 feet (40 meters) into a ravine after being released from the jump platform at the popular “Skeleton Bridge.”
According to reports, Maria Eduarda was escorted onto the platform by two men before being pushed over the edge.
Moments later, panic erupted.
Bystanders suddenly realized something was terribly wrong: she had not been connected to the safety rope.
Videos circulating online reportedly captured the horrifying aftermath.
As Maria Eduarda fell, voices could be heard shouting in desperation.
“The rope, people, the rope!”
Those five words have since become a haunting reminder of the devastating mistake that cost a young woman her life.
Footage also reportedly showed the safety rope still tangled on the ground instead of being attached to her harness.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, but there was nothing they could do. Maria Eduarda was pronounced dead at the site of the accident.
Authorities immediately opened a criminal investigation.
According to witness statements provided to Military Police, event staff allegedly failed to secure the safety cord before the jump took place.
The tragedy has now led to six people being taken into custody for questioning, including five men and one woman connected to the event.
Reports also indicate that some individuals allegedly fled the scene after the accident.
Police launched a helicopter search over nearby wooded areas before locating at least two suspects near the Ponte do Esqueleto trail.
Maria Eduarda’s fiancé was reportedly present during the event and later required medical attention after becoming ill upon learning of her death.
One organizer, identified as Luis Felipe, reportedly told investigators that employees earned approximately $34 per jump and that no staff member had clearly assigned responsibilities during the activity.
Instead, he claimed safety checks were carried out “jointly.”
When investigators asked who was responsible for the final equipment inspection before Maria Eduarda jumped, his answer stunned many observers.
“I can’t remember.”
Another suspect, Maicon Fernandes Cintra, reportedly gave police the same response.
Their attorney, Rafael Gomes dos Santos, later stated that those involved were “in a state of shock.”
Authorities continue to investigate whether organizers had proper authorization to operate the event and whether safety protocols were ignored.
The case has sparked outrage across social media, with many people questioning how a dangerous activity like bungee jumping could proceed without a final verification that a participant was securely attached.
What should have been a thrilling experience turned into a devastating loss for a young woman with her entire future ahead of her.
Maria Eduarda was only 21 years old.
💔 Rest in peace, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas.
