At first, some people thought it might be a dolphin. But once lifeguards recognized the danger, they reacted immediately, using sirens and loudspeakers to order everyone out of the water.
Swimmers left the ocean quickly, and fortunately no one was hurt. Officials later said the shark did not appear aggressive, although its closeness to shore was unusual enough to require a fast response.
