The celebration had been filled with familiar sights of happiness: colorful balloons tied to fences, a table set with cake and snacks, and children running through the yard laughing. In a matter of moments, that happiness was shattered. Witnesses say the sound of gunshots was so sudden and overwhelming that parents and relatives barely had time to react, desperately pulling children to the ground and shielding them with their bodies as panic spread through the home and surrounding street.
