For a few seconds, the world shrank to that spot of earth. My son gripped my sleeve, eyes wide, waiting for me to name the horror we were staring at. The thing looked like a hand, twisted and raw, its red “fingers” glistening as if they had just broken through the ground. The faint, sickly smell of rot made my stomach tighten.I forced myself to step closer, phone in hand, and quickly searched. The answer felt almost unreal: not a creature, not a corpse, but a fungus—“devil’s fingers,” a rare mushroom that mimics decay to lure insects. I laughed with relief, but it came out shaky. My son laughed too, still clinging to me. As we walked on, I kept glancing back, humbled by how easily nature can turn a simple walk into a moment you’ll never forget.
