What started as a normal week on campus has ended in heartbreak for one Virginia college community. A young athlete with a famous last name and a bright future is now being remembered instead of cheered.
Radford University is mourning the loss of Freshman Baseball Player Joey Raccuia, who tragically passed away at such a tender age.
A Sudden and Shocking Loss
Authorities confirmed the incident happened not far from Radford’s baseball stadium, a place that had quickly become his home away from home.
According to reporting by The Roanoke Times, police officers and rescue workers immediately provided medical help, but Raccuia was pronounced dead on the scene, and no additional information was released on Wednesday by the Radford Police Department.

The location alone has left many shaken, for teammates and fans, it’s impossible not to think about how close he was to the field where he competed.
Photos of Raccuia show a focused and determined young athlete. In one image, he’s captured mid-stride on the field in his navy Radford uniform, glove in hand, looking every bit the dedicated competitor.

Another portrait shows him in a red Highlanders jersey and navy cap, offering a soft smile to the camera. The combination of intensity on the field and warmth off it makes the loss feel even heavier.

In their statement, the team wrote:
