Bodycam Video Released After Fatal Deputy-Involved Shooting During San Marcos Traffic Stop

Authorities have released body camera footage from a traffic stop in San Marcos that escalated into a fatal deputy-involved shooting earlier this year.

The incident occurred on February 18 and involved deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office. According to investigators, deputies initially stopped a vehicle after noticing irregularities that raised suspicion about the car.

The vehicle involved was described as a red Hyundai Sonata.

Deputies reportedly observed that the vehicle’s registration and vehicle identification number (VIN) did not match. In addition, the steering column appeared damaged, which authorities say is often a sign that a vehicle may have been stolen or tampered with.

Because of these concerns, deputies conducted a traffic stop to investigate further.

Body camera footage released by the sheriff’s office shows deputies approaching the vehicle and interacting with the driver during the stop. The situation appeared to escalate rapidly during the encounter.

According to investigators, the driver, identified as a 33-year-old man, suddenly grabbed a handgun during the stop.

Authorities say the man then fired the weapon, prompting deputies to return fire.

The suspect was struck during the exchange of gunfire and later died from his injuries. Deputies immediately moved to secure the weapon and control the scene following the shooting.

No deputies were reported injured during the incident.

Deputy-involved shootings are typically subject to multiple layers of investigation. In cases like this, law enforcement agencies often release body camera footage to provide transparency and allow the public to see the sequence of events leading up to the use of force.

Officials say the video is part of an ongoing review of the incident, which will include examination of body camera footage, witness statements, forensic evidence, and reports from the deputies involved.

Authorities have not yet released all details surrounding the confrontation but say the investigation will determine the full sequence of events that occurred during the traffic stop.

Incidents involving police use of deadly force often draw significant public attention, especially when video footage becomes available. Body camera releases can provide important context about what officers experienced during the encounter.

Officials with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office say additional information may be released once the investigation is completed.

For now, the newly released bodycam footage offers a closer look at how a routine traffic stop in San Marcos quickly escalated into a deadly confrontation.
