The granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy died on September 21 at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts. She was just 42.
Behind the famous Kennedy name was a mother and educator whose life took several dramatic turns. She ran the Boston Marathon, suffered a spinal cord injury that left her paralyzed, and endured the devastating loss of one of her three children.
And while much of Kyle’s story remained outside the glare surrounding America’s most famous political dynasty, photographs from her life reveal the family at the heart of it.

Kyle Kennedy Dies at 42
According to Kyle’s obituary, she “passed away peacefully” at her Westwood home. People later reported that a death certificate confirmed Kyle died on September 21. Her cause of death had not yet been determined, while the manner of death remained under investigation.
Her aunt Rory Kennedy, the youngest of Robert and Ethel Kennedy’s 11 children, paid tribute to her niece following the news. “Kyle was a wonder – as mother of her beautiful boys, as a daughter, a sister, a friend. And as an educator, too,” Rory told People.
She described Kyle as “funny and fierce and much beloved by all of us,” and added, “She will be deeply missed.”

Kyle was the daughter of Michael LeMoyne Kennedy and Victoria Denise Gifford. She was also one of Robert and Ethel Kennedy’s 34 grandchildren. But tragedy entered her life early.
Her father died in a skiing accident in Aspen, Colorado, on New Year’s Eve in 1997. Michael was only 39, while Kyle was 13.
From the Kennedy Family to the Classroom
Born in Washington, D.C., on July 6, 1984, Kyle spent much of her childhood in Cohasset, Massachusetts. She attended Milton Academy, where she excelled academically and received awards for her Latin scholarship.
Kyle later studied history at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., including a semester abroad in Florence, Italy. That stay left her with a lasting appreciation for Tuscan Renaissance art — and another skill that followed her home.
