A sore arm, fatigue, headache, and mild fever are common after COVID-19 vaccination and usually resolve within a few days. Myocarditis, inflammation of the heart muscle, and pericarditis, inflammation around the heart, are rare but recognized complications, particularly after mRNA vaccines. Cases have occurred most often in adolescent and young adult males, frequently within a week of vaccination. Symptoms alone cannot establish the cause, and COVID-19 infection itself can also affect the heart.New chest pain, shortness of breath, or a pounding or irregular heartbeat warrants prompt medical assessment. Severe or persistent chest pain, difficulty breathing, or fainting calls for emergency care immediately—do not assume vaccination explains it. Tell the clinician when symptoms began and when you received your vaccine. Many patients with vaccine-associated myocarditis improve with treatment and rest, but follow-up matters. For future doses, discuss your medical history and individual benefits and risks with a healthcare professional.
