By midnight, the neighborhood had learned how loud silence can be. Engines idled at the edge of the cordon, headlights pointed toward a line no one was allowed to cross. Police radios crackled in clipped bursts, each murmur a reminder that something serious, and possibly irreversible, was unfolding just out of sight. The ordinary landmarks of daily life—corner stores, bus stops, playgrounds—were suddenly recast as potential danger zones.
